How the pay per mile calculator works
Mileage pay is your miles times your rate. A rate of 60 cents per mile on 2,500 miles comes to $1,500. The calculator then adds extra stop pay and detention pay for the week to get a weekly total, and multiplies that total by the weeks you plan to work to get a yearly estimate.
The effective rate shows your whole weekly total divided by your miles. It is a quick way to compare two jobs when one pays a higher mileage rate and the other pays more for stops or waiting time.

Tips for a more accurate estimate
- Use the miles your carrier actually pays on. Some pay practical miles and some pay shortest route miles, and the two can differ.
- Count only the stops and detention hours that are paid. Many carriers pay detention only after a set number of free hours at a dock.
- Leave out weeks you expect to take off for home time or vacation.
- Bonuses, per diem, benefits and taxes are not included, so treat the result as gross pay before deductions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate truck driver pay per mile?
Multiply the miles you drive by your rate in dollars. At 55 cents per mile, 2,000 miles pays $1,100. Add any stop pay, detention pay or other extras to get your total for the trip or week.
How do I turn cents per mile into yearly pay?
Multiply your weekly miles by your rate to get weekly pay, then multiply by the number of weeks you work. For example, 2,500 miles a week at 60 cents is $1,500 a week, or $75,000 over 50 weeks.
What is detention pay?
Detention pay is money some carriers and shippers pay when a driver waits at a shipper or receiver past an agreed amount of free time. The rate and the number of free hours depend on the company, so check your pay sheet or contract.
Is this calculator an exact paycheck?
No. It is an estimate of gross pay. Taxes, insurance, per diem, bonuses and other deductions or additions are not included, and your actual pay depends on how your company counts miles and extras.
